Trip Type
The Museum of Madness hosts more than ten diverse exhibitions, and we invite you to visit us multiple times. Tours are guided and last between 1.5 and 2 hours.
The exhibitions cover four thematic areas:
On the Trail of Madness: From the emergence of the first psychiatric hospitals and almshouses to the opening of social care homes after World War II. It focuses specifically on the history of the former institution for the mentally and nervously ill and the phenomenon of madness in general.
On the Trail of Cmurek’s Turbulent History: From the braided ornamentation above the castle’s original entrance and the 12th-century relief of a dragon devouring a human, through the inspiring Renaissance and its quest for perfect beauty, the dynamic era of Protestantism and the Counter-Reformation, all the way to the early 20th century when the national border was established below the castle.
On the Trail of the “European Amazon”: From 25-million-year-old dolphin fossils and million-year-old seashells from the Miocene sea, to the free-flowing Mura River, which hides as many as 65 different fish species in its rapids. It also covers the struggle to preserve the Mura, which has been included in the UNESCO list of biosphere reserves.
On the Trail of Art: Whichever path you take, you will encounter numerous artworks spanning various historical periods, all the way to contemporary art.
